British police said in a statement released on Thursday that the 39 people found in a shipping container near London were believed to be Chinese nationals that eight of the deceased are women and 31 are men. The driver, identified as 25-year-old Northern Irish man Mo Robinson, remain under arrest on suspicion of murder. There were unconfirmed that Robinson himself called for an ambulance on discovering the bodies in the container.

The truck which police is investigating was registered in Bulgaria and entered the UK from Holyhead, Wales, on 19 October.

The NCA identified 6993 potential people smuggling victims in 2018, of whom 1151 were conclusively found to have been victims that originated from 130 countries. Alp Mehmet, chair of Migration Watch UK, said people trafficking continued and he warned "such tragedies will occur for so long as the UK fails to properly resource the border".
